Alexandr Vondra, the Czech Minister of Defence said at the GLOBSEC Bratislava forum that the cuts in defence budgets have been too dramatic in the last couple of years. According to him, we have to avoid free riding and must actively promote solidarity within the Alliance.
Vondra told that a joint declaration of the Visegrad foreign and defence ministers on the V4 collaboration is going to be adopted at the NATO ministerial meeting next week. This is another signal that there is a political will and strong motivation in the Central European countries to make progress in this field. Yesterday, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared that his new government is committed to the regional cooperation, as well.
In the meantime, the Visegrad “DAV4” Expert Group which was established by the Slovak Atlantic Commission and its regional partners announced that it will publish its policy report on the subject soon. After months of consultations with the V4 ministries, NATO Headquarters, Norway and Sweden, the expert group will come up with the concrete recommendations for their governments before the NATO Chicago Summit.
