François Heisbourg

Special Advisor, Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique, Paris; Chairman, Foundation Council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy; Chairman, International Institute for Strategic Studies

Professor François Heisbourg is currently the Chairman of the International Institute for the Strategic Studies and the Chairman of the Foundation Council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

Professor Heisbourg began his political career in 1978 as the member of the French Foreign Ministry’s Policy Planning Staff. From 1979 till 1981 he was the First Secretary at the French Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Professor Heisbourg was the international security adviser to the French Minister of Defence (1981-1984) and was the founding-member of the French-German Commission on Security and Defence.

In years 1987-1992 he was the Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. From 2001 till 2005 Professor Heisbourg was the Director and since 2005 the Special Advisor of Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (Foundation for Strategic Research) in Paris. Since 1998 Professor Heisbourg has been the Chairman of the Foundation Council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and since 2001 the Chairman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Professor Heisbourg has been the author of numerous scholarly articles and books on foreign policy and international security.
