Christopher S. Murphy

Chris Murphy, the junior United States Senator for Connecticut, has dedicated his career to public service as an advocate for Connecticut families.  Senator Murphy has been a strong voice in the Senate fighting for job creation, affordable healthcare, education and forward-looking foreign policy. Elected in 2012, Murphy serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. 

As a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Murphy has been an outspoken proponent of diplomacy, international human rights and the needs for clear-eyed American leadership abroad.  He serves as the Ranking Member on the Foreign Relations Subcommittee covering the Middle East and Counterterrorism. From 2013-2015 he served as Chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs.

Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Murphy served Connecticut’s Fifth Congressional District for three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his three terms, Murphy served on the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the Committee on Financial Services.    

Murphy grew up in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and attended Williams College in Massachusetts. In 2002, he graduated from UConn Law School in Hartford, Connecticut.
