Lazăr Comănescu

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania

Lazăr Comănescu was appointed minister of foreign affairs of Romania on November 17th, 2015. This is his second term in office, as he previously held the position of minister of foreign affairs of Romania from April to December 2008. He holds the diplomatic rank of ambassador since 1998.

From February to November 2015, he served as foreign policy adviser of the President of Romania. For 6 years, from 2009 to 2015, he was the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 2001 to 2008 he was the Head of the Mission of Romania to the European Union, respectively (after Romania’s accession to the EU in 2007) the Permanent Representative of Romania to the European Union. From 1998 to 2001 he served as the Head of the Mission of Romania to NATO and EU.

Minister Lazăr Comănescu graduated the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest (Faculty of International Economic Relations). In 1973 he graduated the “Cours de civilisation et langue française contemporaines” of the Sorbonne, in Paris.

He holds a Ph.D. in International Economics since 1983 and from 1995 to1998 he was an Associate Professor of the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest. He is a Member of the Scientific Board of the Romanian Institute for International Studies and a Member of the Scientific Consultative Board of the European Institute in Romania. He is a founding member of the Warsaw Central European Forum.

Minister Lazăr Comănescu is author or co-author of several university courses and books, among which: “Economia Mondială (World Economy)” – Editions of 1985, 1990, 1995; “Tehnicile tranzacțiilor economice internaționale (Techniques of Economic International Transactions)” -1989; “Dicționar de relații economice internaționale (Dictionary of International Economic Relations)” - 1993; “The EU and Romania: Accession and Beyond” – Ed. David Phinnemore, UK 2006. He is also the author of articles and interviews on European and international themes in Romanian and foreign publications.

Minister Lazăr Comănescu is born on the 4 of June 1949 in Horezu/Vâlcea/Romania. He is married with Mihaela Comănescu and has a daughter.
