We are pleased to invite you to GLOBSEC’s final sustainability expert webinar of 2021, merging our yearlong building renovation task force and Slovakia Fit for 55 strategic stakeholder dialogue series for a discussion about opportunities and challenges facing Slovakia's RES in heating & cooling (H&C).
GLOBSEC’s building renovation taskforce was launched a year ago in partnership with Slovakia’s Ministry of Finance as part of Recovery and Resilience facility consultations and has remained relevant with the support of VUB and Slovak Ministries of Environment and Transport & Construction. In parallel, Slovakia FF55 programming has examined the potential for Slovakia’s industrial decarbonization and automotive circularity in the context of the European Green Deal (EGD).
The building sector has an outsized energy consumption and emissions footprint, particularly in Slovakia and across the CEE region, owing to the old and mostly untouched building stock. The EU's building renovation wave strategy brought some needed attention, but especially in Slovakia, the RRF has become a catalyst for the sector, devoting nearly half of the green investments. While everyone can get on board with the primacy of the energy efficiency first principle, the debate continues over how to define a sustainable pathway for the H&C sector where heating is 70% dependent on fossil fuels. As part of its July FF55 update, the European Commission has proposed annual increases in the percentage of renewables in H&C to achieve 49% for renewables use in buildings by 2030.
