29 January, 2014 – 08:15 to 10:00
Bruegel, Rue de la Charité 33, Brussels

The breakfast seminar – organised by Bruegel in partnership with demosEUROPA – Centre for European Strategy (Warsaw) and Central European Policy Institute (Bratislava) will take stock of Central Europe’s performance over the first decade of EU membership. It will examine the region’s economic and political fundamentals as the latter strives to complete its catch-up with the economies of Western Europe. An impulse for the discussion will be provided by the report „Central Europe Fit for the Future“ which is an outcome of the work of a Reflection Group consisting of the region’s leading officials, opinion-makers and academics. The report – whose authors will be speakers at the event – calls for the refashioning of the region’s growth model with focus on competitiveness and innovation capacity as well as overcoming problems with connectivity and cross-border infrastructure. The list of speakers includes:

  • Edward Lucas, Senior Editor, The Economist
  • Katarína Mathernová, Senior Advisor, World Bank
  • Rainer Münz, Non-resident fellow, Bruegel; Head of Research, Erste Bank
  • Milan Nič, Senior Fellow, Central European Policy Institute
  • Paweł Świeboda, President, demosEUROPA – Centre for European Strategy
  • Chair: Zsolt Darvas, Senior Fellow, Bruegel
