GLOBSEC 2018 Young Leaders Forum

Over the past few years the GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum (GYLF) has evolved into one of the most prestigious regional meetings of young professionals and future decision-makers. That’s because GYLF is the only well-established forum in Central Europe that provides a platform for creating an active network of young inspirational leaders. Recent policy developments in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world only underline the demand for a strong policy-making platform where solutions to the most urgent issues can be discussed and enacted. Hundreds of the most influential experts from leading European, transatlantic and Asian think-tanks, as well as academics, politicians, business leaders and innovators, will once again come to the GLOBSEC Forum to discuss issues that make headlines in the global media.

We believe it is of crucial importance to engage young leaders, professionals and experts in taking accountable decisions that are inspired by their fresh, innovative ideas.

The aim of the project is 1) to give the young generation an opportunity to discuss current challenges in international affairs, 2) develop innovative approaches in the context of modern technologies, 3) improve policy-making skills and 4) to network not only with their fellows, but also with distinguished leaders and experts. GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum, organised on the side-lines of the annual GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum, is an excellent opportunity for young people to present their views on current foreign affairs.

INTERCONNECTION WITH THE GLOBSEC 2018 BRATISLAVA FORUM

GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum allows young professionals to take advantage of the parallel GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum. The interconnection between both events gives them an opportunity to participate in different sessions and conduct discussions with high-profile politicians, decision-makers, opinion-builders, prominent analysts and think-tankers. Because GYLF 2018 will take place at the same venue as GLOBSEC 2018, young professionals will also have the chance to actively participate in several main sessions of the GLOBSEC Forum and engage in the Q&A parts of debates.

LINKING WITH EXPERTS

We connect participants who are looking to become decision-makers with seasoned diplomats, professionals and top-notch experts in many ways, including off-the-record debates. These are in-depth and hard-hitting moderated discussions with respected personalities in a closed, intimate setting.

POLICY WORKING GROUPS

Policy working groups provide participants with a rare opportunity to make strategic policy proposals and suggest plans for action for selected main panels of the GLOBSEC Forum. The one-month pre-forum activity will test the participants’ skills in drafting policy documents. Presentation, speaking and negotiation skills will also be assessed. The working groups’ activities will combine expert presentations with small group discussions focusing on a specific topic. Led by a small number of experts in the field, the emphasis will be on grappling with the issues in question in small groups where each participant will be encouraged to voice his/her opinion before presenting the main findings in front of the GLOBSEC Forum audience. As part of the promotion of policy outcomes, a group of senior decision-makers will be invited to attend the final session, where the policy papers will be scrutinised. This kind of procedure aims to get to the heart of each topic, promote a debate with experts and allow participants to develop deeper insights, reach conclusions and formulate recommendations on relevant issues.

GYLF engages its participants through:

• Private dialogue and best practices sharing via a Facebook Group
• Content preparation and brainstorming in GYLF Working groups (recommendations for main panel discussions) prior to face-to-face interaction with leaders at the Forum
• Participation in the GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum 2018
• Establishing professional contacts with peers and senior stakeholders

GYLF ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT WITH THE GLOBSEC ACADEMY CENTRE

In 2016, the GLOBSEC organisation established the GLOBSEC Academy Centre, a platform with a primary focus on finding exceptional young individuals and educating them to become the next generation of world-class analysts. GYLF Alumni members also get the chance to participate in GLOBSEC Academy Centre projects.

FURTHER INFORMATION

We will provide accommodation and board subsidies for all GYLF participants to help offset the participation cost. We will not cover transportation costs, however, travel grants may be distributed to selected participants on an individual basis and only up to the price decided by the organisers.

REQUIREMENTS

• Between 25 and 35 years of age
• NATO or PfP country citizenship, Mediterranean Dialogue, or partner countries (Australia, Japan) citizenship
• Experience in the fields of foreign and security policy, European Union agenda, international law, world economy, democratic transitions, energy policy, journalism, electoral politics, humanitarian issues or any other field relevant to current international relations
• Working knowledge of English
• Willingness to engage in regular online activity over an extended period of time
• Willingness to write at least one topical article or blog referring to GYLF before, during or 14 days after the Forum and/or an article for the GLOBSEC Magazine online platform
• Interest in long-term engagement with the GLOBSEC Academy Centre

To be considered for this program, candidates must submit the online application form with the following materials by midnight CET, 31 March (extended deadline):

• CV including nationality and age
• Motivation letter that’s no longer than 600 words
• Suggestion of a topic for discussion during the GYLF sessions, including the title, short synopsis and three questions
