French President Emmanuel Macron will pay a working visit to Slovakia on Friday 26 October, where he will meet with his Slovak counterpart Andrej Kiska as well as Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini. Following the meeting, President Macron will take part in a GLOBSEC-organised public discussion entitled “Shaping the Future of Europe”. The event is part of a prestigious series of talks that the French President holds in key EU cities.

In his opening remarks, accompanied by Prime Minister Pellegrini, President Macron  will outline his ideas for the future and reform of the European Union. The French President will then hold an open discussion with invited Slovak citizens – especially the younger generation – to determine how they perceive events shaping the EU agenda.

“Such an initiative, coming directly from the French president, is not only unique in Europe, but also indicates that one of the most powerful states in the European Union is interested in the opinion of citizens of smaller countries. President Macron offers Slovak youth an opportunity to have a constructive debate with him. In doing so, the Slovak Republic becomes the only country in the Visegrad region to talk about and shape the future of the European Union,” said GLOBSEC’s President Róbert Vass.

Thanks to the support of the #MYSMEEU initiatitive of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, the Embassy of France in Bratislava and the City of Bratislava, GLOBSEC is delighted to be organising the public part of only the second visit by a French president since the establishment of the Slovak Republic. The date of President Macron’s visit is also significant, as he will come two days before celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Republic. His speech and discussion will take place at 4 pm in the historical Mirror Hall of Primatial Palace. This place is also significant as more than 200 years ago the Peace of Bratislava was signed here with France.

Live Streaming of the discussion will be available at www.globsec.org/livestream and at our Facebook
