Eugeniusz Smolar is a Board Member at the Polish Institute of International Affairs in Warsaw, former President of the Center for International Relations. Political prisoner 1968 – 1969. A political émigré in Sweden – studied Sociology and Political Sciences at Uppsala University. 1975 -1997 – journalist and later director of the Polish Section of the BBC World Service in London. Assisted democracy movements and later “Solidarność” in Poland and in other communist countries, including Charter 77 in Czechoslovakia. Co-publisher of émigré journal Aneks and of Aneks Publishing House as well as of East European Reporter in London. Following return to Poland he became Deputy Chairman of Polish Radio and its Program Director (1998-2005). He is a Chairman of the Polish-Czech Forum and has been involved in the Polish-German, Polish-Russian and Polish-Ukrainian dialogue. Professionally he concentrates on issues related to the European Security, Common Security and Defence Policy, future of NATO, Eastern Policy of Poland and of the European Union and Russia’s internal and foreign policy. E. Smolar resides now in Brussels as the Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre for European Studies.
