H.E. Carmelo Abela currently serves as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion of Malta.

Carmelo Abela started his career in 1990 as Manager at Mid Med Bank Ltd / HSBC Bank Malta plc., and continued until 2014. Since 1994 until 1996 Abela served as Local councillor at Żejtun.

In 1996 Carmelo Abela was elected Member of Parliament for the first time and was re-elected in every subsequent election. In this capacity, he served as Opposition Assistant Whip, as well as Cashier and Secretary of the Opposition parliamentary group.

Since 1998 until 2003 he was appointed Opposition Spokesperson on Youth and Sport. He was named Opposition Main Spokesperson for Education Youth, Sports and Culture from 2003 until 2008. Since 2003 until 2010 he served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. Between years 2008 and 2013 Abela worked as Opposition Main Spokesman for Industry and Foreign Investment, and subsequently for Social Policy.

From 2013 until 2014 Abela served as Whip of the Government Parliamentary Group. Since 2013 until 2015 he was a Member on the House of Representatives’ Standing Committee on House Business. Between years 2013 and 2016 he was appointed Regional Representative on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association as well as he was Head of Delegation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE simultaneously.

In 2014 Abela served as Government Spokesperson at the Office of the Prime Minister. He was appointed Minister for Home Affairs and National Security from 2014 until 2017. From 2017 up until now Carmelo Abela serves as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion.
