13.01.2021 - European Security Architecture: Shaping Back Better

07.01.2021

13 January 2021 (Wednesday)

3 PM – 4 PM CET / 9 AM – 10 AM EST

In a globalized and rapidly changing world, security challenges have become more multidimensional and complex. No EU Member State can possibly confront these threats alone. When it comes to security and defence, the interests of all Member States are inseparably linked, yet threat perceptions in Member States diverge. What is more they are divided on how they see and understand attempts to build European strategic autonomy. It is worth mentioning that European Security Architecture goes beyond the EU and includes key nations such as the United Kingdom and Norway.

This webinar will try to answer the following questions:

  • What are the challenges of European Security Architecture as of 2021?
  • What partnerships with key partners (i.e. Norway, the UK and the US) can bring to address emerging issues such as hybrid threats, migration, cyber security, border management and crisis management (incl. maritime security, counterpiracy, and countertrafficking)?
  • Which formats prove to be the most effective in working with partners: institutional vs ad hoc formats?
  • What are the attitudes and perceptions towards building European strategic autonomy beyond the EU?

Speakers:

  • Federica Mogherini, the Rector of the College of Europe, former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission
  • Radek Sikorski, MEP, Poland, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence, Poland
  • Amb. Sofie From-Emmesberger, Chair of the EU’s Political and Security Committee
  • Charles Grant, Director, Centre for European Reform, London

Moderation: Alena Kudzko, Director, GLOBSEC Policy Institute, Bratislava
