This time around the German federal elections is watched with a sharpened focus all over Europe and, especially, in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). We are witnessing the end of Angela Merkel’s tenure and understandingly some uncertainty can be felt in the air. Both Germany and CEE are highly interdependent and are mutually benefiting from the current relationship. Economically well-running supply chains, large scale employment, and access to relatively cheap but educated labour is bringing profits in Germany and has been the base of the CEE region’s successful economic model. Politically, the countries from the CEE region have been sound supporters of Berlin within the EU and in exchange have been “sheltered” when misbehaving.

  • What can we make of the election results?
  • What are some of the expected shifts in the relationship between Germany and the CEE region?
  • What are some new opportunities for this relationship?
  • Can the change of guard in Germany open venues for CEE to have a more prominent role within the EU?
  • Will there be a new EU strategy coming from Berlin? Where would the CEE fit?

Speakers:

  • Agnieszka Łada-Konefał, Deputy Director, German Institute of Polish Affairs
  • Milan Nič, Senior Fellow, Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP)
  • Rosen Plevneliev, President of the Republic of Bulgaria (2012-2017)
