October 7

GLOBSEC, one of the most influential think-tanks in Central Europe, is organizing the 10th edition of the Tatra Summit, taking place on 8-10 October in the High Tatras, Slovakia.

Economic recovery

The conference will focus on the post-crisis economic recovery of Europe and how the public and private sectors can come together to meet the challenges of 2021. Speakers will examine the role that Central and Eastern Europe can play in Europe’s economic recovery, and the solutions the region can bring to the table.

The conference will feature high-level speakers such as Mathias Corman, the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Pierre Wunsch, the Governor of the Central Bank of Belgium, and the Governor of the Bank of Slovenia, Boštjan Vasle. Beata Javorcik, the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, will also attend. From Slovakia, Eduard Heger, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, and ministers Andrej Doležal, Richard Sulík, Ivan Korčok, Veronika Remišová, Mária Kolíková and Vladimír Lengvarský will be present.

„The Tatra Summit was first organized 10 years ago as a reaction to the financial and economic crisis and the need of interconnecting the European and Slovak debate, which practically hadn’t existed then. Today we are facing a global crisis again. Slovakia and Europe must change today’s crisis into an opportunity and recover economic growth on a new basis. To be able to tackle such a challenge, regional cooperation is not enough: we also need to connect the public and private sectors. And that’s the platform that Tatra Summit represents”, commented Róbert Vass, the president and founder of GLOBSEC.

The Summit will also launch the Tatra Summit Insight Report. This publication, offering insights into the CEE economy, examines how disruption can forge economic growth in Central and Eastern Europe, with a spotlight on Estonia, and how bottom-up education initiatives can help deliver the skills needed for economic growth in the region. A unique element of the Report is GLOBSEC’s first-ever Strategic Transformation Index. This benchmarks the CEE9 economies’ recovery from the pandemic in relative terms and offers evidence-based policy insights into the region’s past macro-resilience performance, as well as forward-looking structural policy areas, including education, green and digital transitions, and innovation.

Strict health measures and focus on sustainability

The Tatra Summit will be held under strict hygienic measures due to the pandemic, and host only fully vaccinated guests who will be required to provide proof of vaccination.

The health of our guests and our team is a priority for us. Therefore, we decided to only host vaccinated people as the risk of COVID-19 infection is much lower in their case. We have done our utmost in order to provide a safe event for everyone taking part. Besides the vaccination requirement we have also undertaken strict hygienic measures”, explains Milan Solár, the vice-president of GLOBSEC.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, there will be a special train departing from Bratislava to Štrba, transporting the GLOBSEC Tatra Summit guests to the venue. The Slovak Minister of Transport, Andrej Doležal will be welcoming everyone at the train station in Bratislava.

„We wanted Tatra Summit guests to travel in a modern and more sustainable way. Sustainability will be key to the post-pandemic recovery of Europe and Slovakia and we are committed to using our resources, including from the Recovery Plan, for sustainable green projects, especially in railway transport,“ commented minister Doležal.

The tradition of the Tatra Summit goes back to 2011, since when the conference has hosted personalities such as Kristalina Georgieva, Margarethe Vestager, Olaf Scholz, Donald Tusk, José Ángel Gurría, and Wolfgang Schäuble.

The strategic partners of this year’s conference are the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.
