About

With the ever-increasing proliferation of online disinformation, hate speech, harassment, and extremist content posing a challenge not only to democracy, state institutions, and rule of law but also to public order and security, police authorities find themselves in front of new challenges. Lacking a unified approach and access to any specialized tools or technologies to help them combat these online threats, their capabilities remain limited.

The VIGILANT project aims to change this and equip Police Authorities and individual officers with cutting-edge disinformation identification and analysis tools, technology, and knowledge that would make their fight against criminal online content easier and more effective. To achieve this goal, the project will establish a web-based platform providing Police Authorities with the technical capabilities and institutional knowledge necessary for combating disinformation; comprehensive trainings advising police officers on how to carry out an investigation of such campaigns and how to intervene in these cases; and lastly with strong support through a specialist European network for officers to share their experience and knowledge and to come up with a unified European approach to a problem that ignores borders.

The VIGILANT project pursues three main objectives that all aim at helping Police Authorities in combating criminal online content.

  1. Devising a set of modular tools integrated into a single web-based platform providing Police Authorities with the technical capabilities and institutional knowledge necessary for combating disinformation.

  1. Holding a series of specialized trainings for police officers to enhance their skills in investigating disinformation, hate speech, and extremist online content and advising them on effective means of intervention.

  1. Establishing a specialist European network for officers to share their experience and knowledge and to promote a unified European approach.
