GLOBSEC Weekly Roundup - EU After COVID-19. Moving on.

26.06.2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted areas where the crisis revealed fundamental challenges. Democratic regimes appear to be one of the most vulnerable. Polling conducted in 10 Central and Eastern European countries by the GLOBSEC’s Democracy and Resilience Programme led to a new publication that presents findings of how people in the region perceive their current governance system, institutions media and social media and whether these views influence or reflect their beliefs in conspiracies or misinformation in any way. The publication occurs at the right time and coincides with the EU’s wider approach to strengthen the resilience of democracies, to address accountability for misinformation, harmful content and 'infodemics’ spreading on social media as well as to prevent detrimental activities of external actors which will be set out in the European Democracy Action Plan and Digital Services Act.
In light of the Next Generation recovery plan, the issues of internal and external solidarity have stirred some debate among the EU Member States. The latest EPIN report features contributions from leading experts expressing their views on the two areas of the EU’s involvement in the post-COVID recovery phase -  focus on its internal issues and the EU’s struggle to fulfil its geopolitical ambitions which would logically result in the EU’s more active involvement in aiding the third parties heavily struck by the pandemic, with Kinga Brudzinska’s take on the Polish perspective on these matters.
Priorities of the CEE countries regarding European integration and transatlantic relations were discussed in an event jointly organised by GOBSEC and CEPA  with State secretaries and ministers of the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia this week.
